Seen as a subtropical paradise along a bicultural frontera (borderland), the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas was characterized as The Magic Valley by those promoting this expansive land of beauty, abundance, and calm. Farming was long the force of the Valley’s economy, with water from the Rio Bravo/Rio Grande sustaining a 320-day growing season. These photographs of my birthplace have become a testament to a languid cadence of living that is now supplanted by population growth, tourism, maquiladora manufacturing, and proximate drug wars.
